Warts

Warts are non-cancerous skin growths that appear in the top layer of the skin. Warts are caused by a viral infection called the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are several different kinds of warts, including: common warts, foot (plantar) warts, and flat warts.

Warts are passed from person to person and take months to appear from the first time of contact. The virus occurs more easily if the skin has been damaged or the immune system has been weakened, but some people are just more likely to catch warts than others.

In children, the warts may disappear without treatment over several months or years. Often, warts in adults require treatment to resolve, especially if the warts become painful or begin to spread. Dermatologists may use a variety of treatments to combat warts, including: salicylic acid, cantharidin, cryotherapy (freezing), and electrosurgery or lasers.
