Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
DeSpain Cayce Dermatology Center offers several treatments for treatment of precancerous lesions and growths.
PDT (Photodynamic Therapy) is an in office treatment using a carefully applied chemical (Levulan, a type of porphyrin) and a light source (usually a fluorescent ‘blue light’ but occasionally IPL or a laser) to treat three types of skin conditions:
1. Actinic Keratoses (AKs, pre cancerous skin spots), typically covered by insurance
2. Sun damaged skin, typically cosmetic and not covered by insurance
3. Acne, an alternative to oral medications, not typically covered by insurance
See the links below specific to the use of PDT to treat AKs, as well as a copy of the consent for this procedure as well as what to expect afterwards.
The treatments cause some skin tingling and stinging, or even moderate pain, but they are over quickly. It is critical to stay out of sunlight or any bright light for at least 48 hrs after the treatment or the skin may burn. Improvement and healing usually is noted within 5 days.
